“There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind.”
While history is a great indicator of the future, it doesn’t necessarily have to define the time to come. The choices you make and the actions you take today will ultimately determine whom you will eventually become. Mistakes of the past are important as they serve as valuable lessons to use today. Feelings of regret, guilt, resentment, and anger over past events only serve to weigh you down. You can’t change the past but you have complete autonomy to make wise choices in the present moment. You can succeed in business even if you have failed before. You can get in shape even if you have been overweight for the longest time. You can enjoy a happy relationship even if you made mistakes in a previous one. You can be happy even if you have experienced tremendous sadness. You can be a resilient survivor of a bad situation rather than a recurring victim.
Perhaps philosopher George Santayana said it best: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Armed with the knowledge of the past, the world is your oyster.
