President's Message

Dear fellow members:

I hope this message finds you and your family safe and well during these unprecedented times.   At this time last year, as I was planning my year ahead as President of our Association, I never would have imagined that only a few months later, our lives would be so dramatically affected by a global pandemic.  A reminder of how life can change in an instant despite our best-laid plans.

I am inspired to share with you one of my favorite parables, the Tale of Two Wolves:

One evening, an elderly

Cherokee brave told his

grandson about a battle that

goes on inside people.

He said "my son, the battle is

between two 'wolves' inside us all.

One is evil. It is anger,

envy, jealousy, sorrow,

regret, greed, arrogance,

self-pity, guilt, resentment,

inferiority, lies, false pride,

superiority, and ego.

The other is good.

It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity,

humility, kindness, benevolence,

empathy, generosity,

truth, compassion and faith."

The grandson thought about

it for a minute and then asked

his grandfather:

"which wolf wins?"

The old Cherokee simply replied,

"the one that you feed."

I encourage all of use to feed the “good wolf” within us.

Programming Update.

I am delighted to share that our Board of Directors, Committee Chairs, YLS Board and Executive Director, have been working hard to pivot our events and programs to a virtual environment where they will remain until we are able to safely resume gathering in person.  We have had numerous successful virtual events, including our Monthly Membership Virtual Lunch Meetings, Membership Reception, and on-point webinars.  Our virtual environment also has enabled us to expand some of our programming by broadening our access to out of town speakers and allowing us to partner on events with other bar associations across the State of Florida.

Due to the generous support of our sponsors, we are providing most programs, including CLE events, at no cost or minimal cost to our members while our events take place virtually.  I wish to again thank our sponsors and acknowledge that we are especially grateful for their ongoing support during this challenging time.

I also am excited to share that after much effort, the Association has transitioned to a new and improved website platform which provides improved functionality.  Kudos to our tech savvy Executive Director, Seema Patel.  If you have not done so already, please take a few minutes to peruse our new website and log-in to update your member profile at  Note:  As we continue to address a few glitches on the website, if you notice anything that needs to be adjusted, please let us know by sending an email to  Thank you in advance for your feedback.

A Few Other Updates.

In an effort to not inundate your e-mail boxes with multiple emails each day, we have consolidated our communications.  Our Monday email will contain a Weekly Update, including upcoming events, news and a Mindful Monday message courtesy of our newly created Health & Wellness Committee.  Now, more than ever, it is imperative we also maintain focus on our own physical and mental health and well-being.  Wellness Resources are listed on our website under News and Resources.

We are starting a 100% Club to recognize law firms (with more than one attorney) in which all attorneys in the firm are members of the SPBCBA. If your law firm qualifies to be listed as part of the 100% Club, please email and let us know.  Members of the 100% Club will be listed on our website and in future issues of The Advocate.

We have several opportunities for you to make a difference with members of our community who need our help. We are continually collecting boxed cereals and canned goods for donation to Boca Helping Hands.   Drop off locations are listed in The Advocate and on our website.  If you prefer to make a monetary donation, you may do so through a link on our website. Donations made to Boca Helping Hands through December 31, 2020 are being matched by an anonymous donor, so now is a great time to donate!   There are also opportunities to “Adopt-a-Case” through Legal Aid; pro-bono cases will be announced during our Monthly Membership Virtual Lunch Meetings as well as listed on our website.  SPBCBA Members who adopt a case (please let us know) will be acknowledged on our website, in The Advocate, and on our Facebook page.

It is my honor and privilege to serve as President of the South Palm Beach County Bar Association for the 2020-2021 bar year.  I am grateful for this opportunity and I am determined to make this another successful year for our Bar Association.

Stay safe and well.

My best,

L.A. Perkins
