President's Message

Dear fellow members:

I hope this message finds you healthy and well and that 2021 is off to a good start for you (as good as it can be with the ongoing pandemic). The new year typically is a time of reflection and planning.   With this, and over the last several months, the Board of Directors has spent a significant amount of time “word smithing” a new Mission Statement for our Bar Association to bring it more in line with our present-day objectives.  I am proud and excited to share the revised Mission Statement with you:

The South Palm Beach County Bar Association is committed to excellence in the legal profession through education, member interaction and collaboration, and community outreach. The Association welcomes diverse perspectives, ideas and experiences. We strive to create an environment where individuals of all races, colors, ethnicities, cultures, religions, genders, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, nationalities, ages, disabilities, and marital and parental status thrive professionally and contribute to our goals. In fulfilling this mission, the Association seeks to uphold the highest degree of civility, ethics and professionalism.

Because the Mission Statement is of paramount importance to our Bar Association, the Board of Directors unanimously voted in favor of including the Mission Statement as part of the SPBCBA Bylaws (the prior Mission Statement had not been included in the Bylaws).  The Bylaws amendment requires a 2/3 vote of all members present at a regular meeting.  As we have previously announced, the vote to approve the addition of the Mission Statement to the Bylaws will take place on Thursday, February 18, 2021, during the Monthly Membership Virtual Lunch Meeting and we hope you will be there and support this important change.

Since the last issue of The Advocate, we have held numerous, successful virtual events which are summarized in The Advocate.  Kudos to our Executive Director, Seema Patel, and various members and committee chairs for all their creativity, including the introduction of software applications which have enhanced our events and been well received.  Beginning next month, we will be hosting a Monthly Virtual Game Night Social Event; we hope you will join us for an evening of camaraderie and fun.  Please refer to the listing of upcoming events in The Advocate as well as on our website at for calendar updates.

On Tuesday, February 23, 2021, the Diversity & Inclusion Committee, in conjunction with the Young Lawyers Section, are co-hosting a three (3) hour CLE titled “LGBTQ 101 Proficiency and Workplace Bias Training.”  The guest speaker, Misty Eyez, is the Director of Women’s & Transgender Programs and the Training Manager for SunServe. Ms. Eyez is an award-winning entertainer and journalist; kudos to the Young Lawyers Section for obtaining a grant which made this possible.

We will soon be seeking applications for a new board member for the 2021-2022 Bar Association year.  Are you interested in serving as a Member of the SPBCBA Board of Directors?  If so, we invite attorney members in good standing to apply by March 31, 2021.  Please feel free to reach out to me or any of our board members with questions about the process or the commitment.

Wishing you a healthy, happy and successful 2021!

My best,

L.A. Perkins
